Have you ever wondered how to get an entry level job at Google or Apple? Beyond being uber-smart, you better start getting your groove on in college before you even think about sending out that resume. According to Gayle Laakman, in her book The Google Resume, it takes a lot more than good grades to get your foot in the door. For a brief intro, here are our 3 favorite pieces of advice to get you noticed:
1 ) Get an Internship. And we’re not talking about being a camp counselor. Start your internship search early every year to set yourself up for a good corporate, start-up, or nonprofit internship.
2) Get Involved. Start doing some community service or volunteer for an organization that is meaningful to you; and volunteering to pass out soup during the holidays doesn’t count. You need to commit a few hours a week to an organization to display your dedication to a cause with no expectation of anything in return…besides world peace, of course.
3) Improve Your Writing Skills. If you’re not a programmer, good writing skills are paramount to getting a top-tier tech job, or any great job for that matter. These skills will come in handy for crafting clear and direct emails on the job, developing proposals for your company, writing cover letters, contributing articles online, and much more. Consider joining a creative writing class after work, or at school, to develop your style.
