The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living 1991

Damien Hirst first came to public attention in London in 1988 when he conceived and curated Freeze, an exhibition in a disused warehouse which showed his work and that of his friends and fellow students at Goldsmiths College. In the nearly quarter of a century since that pivotal show, Hirst has become one of the most influential artists of his generation. This will be the first substantial survey of his work in a British institution and will bring together key works from over twenty years.
The exhibition will include iconic sculptures from his Natural History series, including The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living 1991, in which he suspended a shark in formaldehyde. Also included will be vitrines such as A Thousand Years from 1990, medicine cabinets, pill cabinets and instrument cabinets in addition to seminal paintings made throughout his career using butterflies and flies as well as spots and spins. The two-part installation In and Out of Love, not shown in its entirety since its creation in 1991 and Pharmacy 1992 will be among the highlights of the exhibition.

BP British Art Displays
Welcome to Tate Britain, home of British art. We have recently rehung all our galleries giving a fresh look at British art in the Tate collection. We hope you enjoy exploring the new rooms and the art and artists within them. This is just the beginning of some big changes at Tate Britain over the next two years as we create new experiences for all our visitors.
The BP British Art Displays are presented in several ways. Large areas are devoted to the presentation of historic, twentieth century and contemporary British art. Alongside these are special displays which look at individual artists or particular aspects of British art, and in the Clore Gallery is the Romantics display.
Key Works From the Historic Collection. In the central gallery off the Octagon we have assembled a palatial collection of major paintings hung in period groupings, from Tudor portraits through eighteenth-century landscapes to paintings by the Pre-Raphaelites. Romantics, a major display in the Clore Gallery, presents Romantic art in Britain – its origins, inspirations and legacies – and features JMW Turner, William Blake and John Constable.
A Walk Through the Twentieth Century. Leading away from the central gallery to both sides are rooms exploring the development of British art in the twentieth century, showcasing artists including Whistler, Barbara Hepworth, Francis Bacon and David Hockney.
Contemporary Acquisitions. The contemporary displays present some famous names of contemporary British art with works from Damien Hirst, Cerith Wyn Evans, Gerard Byrne and Mike Nelson.
