In conversation with Anna Lovely – The love of painting
I have just had the pleasure of making a workshop with Anna Lovely at her new gallery in Sydenham and have to say am really excited about her new watercolour classes about to start this month.

Anne does a lot of her work in a sprawling studio space at her new gallery in Sydenham, and the whole place is full of visually stunning pieces of art work.
.
But her watercolours for me tell a story in a fresh delicate way, an immediacy and vitality that often (my oils) cannot capture with the same zing.

”I love watercolours… they are so lively” She starts.

At a glance I can see she has 3 on the go, a couple of scintillating still lifes and a narrative piece.narrative piece.

”Often they just happen in their own way and I encourage my students to really enjoy the nature of the paint itself”.

Anna and I studied at Camberwell and the Royal Academy Schools, and her father Paddy, mother Belle, and daughter, Bonnie, have all studied at Camberwell.
The work is predominantly in watercolour or acrylic, and Anna uses a light, luminous palette of colours. The work is brilliant and glows on the walls.
.
But it is her control of colour instensity and luminosity that has always captivated me… as a peer and fellow student I remember well her early works which had an incredible glow, nay twinkle. The influence of Bonnard and Gwen John seemed more apparent then than now as she has matured her genre in it’s own delicate yet powerful style.

”I’m not very good at lettering” She says preparing to write some wording into a painting of a dreamscape. She deftly places the letters in a way I never could achieve regardless of my years of experience as a sign writer.

”Go on Nick you have a go…” she asks and then places the last line in herself perfectly laughing at my nervous shuffling.

Anna is a seriously good painter by has such a modest quality and sense of fun, which her students all adore. She has 3 decades of teaching experience and will help with a host of technical input and nurture confidence for starters, so any level are welcome to the new class.

We chat and wander around the stunning gallery garden.

”There’s so much inspiration out here…” We pause under a stunning Australian Gum tree. ”Students can paint here and have lunch too – it’s a sanctury…”
.
It really is a Lovely place to hang out and from my own experience attending her life drawing class and running my own workshops, the light in the spacious studio is superb. So for those of you who are curious or are already finding you way merrily this really is the ideal setting to enjoy your painting and share time with a truly dedicated artist.
